Desgining in sustainability
The site is located adjacent to the entry to CassioburyPark (a Grade II designated park of Special Historic Interest) and the River Gade, on the fringe of the Watford suburban area. The 0.19 hectares site has a number of natural constraints including the triangular shape of the site, the western end being heavily wooded and the proximity of trees protected by tree preservation orders.
Despite the constraints a proposal was put forward for the erection of a two storey dwelling with a flat roof, designed in a contemporary style that is both visually appealing and environmentally sustainable.
The building will be a series of linked rooms with glazing being used to emphasise the transparency of this design approach, constructed from a simple palette of high quality materials. It should be noted the design is architecturally distinct from the general vernacular of local properties, however as the building is set back and is visually isolated this less formal design methodology relates to both constraints and opportunities of the site.
The dwelling aims to meet Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, achieved through the use of a sedum roof, solar panel water heating system, sustainable urban drainage system, sun pipes, air to air heat pump and triple glazing for high insulation.
