Ver Valley Walks 1 to 8

Discover the River Ver with one of eight circular walks along the 17 mile River Ver Trail.

Ver Valley Walk 1: The Source Walk, Markyate

First in the series of eight Ver Valley Walks.  The walk takes you to the original source of the River Ver in Bedfordshire.  It rarely flows here now but you can see its course and enjoy the valley landscape on this figure of eight walk.

Ver Valley Walk 2: The Upper Ver Valley, Flamstead

Explore the rolling hills of the Ver valley on this circular walk which takes in the pretty village of Flamstead and hamlet of Trowley Bottom.  Keep an eye out for Red Kites and Buzzards soaring above, as they use the valley thermals to lift them high into the sky. One of a series of eight walks exploring the Ver valley.

Ver Valley Walk 3 – The Winterbourne Walk, Redbourn

Explore the rolling hills of the Ver valley on this circular walk which takes in the pretty village and common of Redbourn and a tributary of the Ver, the River Red.  Listen out for the peewit call of Lapwing as you walk in the wetter meadows. One of a series of eight walks exploring the Ver valley.

Ver Valley Walk 4 – The Redbournbury Walk, Redbourn

Explore the rolling hills of the Ver valley on this circular walk which takes in the pretty village and common of Redbourn.  Crossing the river on stepping stones adds to the experience and you can stop and paddle in the fords if it’s a hot day. One of a series of eight walks exploring the Ver valley.

Ver Valley Walk 5 – The Three Burys Walk, St Albans

Explore the rolling hills of the Ver valley on this circular walk which takes in the pretty hamlets of Childwickbury, Redbournbury and Gorhambury.  Much of this walk is on surfaced estate drives and there are some lovely views across the parkland landscape. One of a series of eight walks exploring the Ver valley.

Ver Valley Walk 6 – The Two Cities Walk, St Albans

Explore the parks and green corridors through historic St Albans on this circular riverside walk. Verulamium Park hosts a heronry along with the remains of a Roman city.  The walk also takes in the Abbey and remains of Sopwell Nunnery. One of a series of eight walks exploring the Ver valley.

Ver Valley Walk 7 – The Watermeadows Walk, St Albans

Follow the River Ver through St Albans, watermeadows and old cress beds to Park Street.  Here you catch the Abbey Flyer train back to St Albans Abbey station to continue your journey back to your original starting point. One of a series of eight walks exploring the Ver valley.

• Time: 2  hours
• Grade: Moderate

Ver Valley Walk 8 – The Confluence Walk, Bricket Wood

Explore the bottom of the Ver valley as the River Ver meanders towards the River Colne.  Much of this walk is on surfaced paths. Moor Mill welcomes walkers so leave your car here and enjoy a drink or a meal on your return. One of a series of eight walks exploring the Ver valley.
