We have seven health walk schemes across Hertfordshire, which are all accredited to a national standard by ‘Walking for Health’. Here are the details and links to their individual walk programmes. Easy-print black and white versions of the current leaflets are also available below. Maps of a selection of the walks are available on the Walk4Life website. 

Health Walks May to August 2012

With some of the Olympics events taking place in Hertfordshire as well as some of the teams staying here during the Olympics, we couldn't not be inspired to get involved this summer! For those of you happier watching the marathon than running it, our 'Olympic Health Walks' are an easy way to get or keep a bit active during the Olympics. Just take part in five walks from any programme below marked Olympic Health Walks image laurel wreaththen get in touch with us to claim your prize (while stocks last)! Make sure you register to walk and print your name on the walk register clearly to ensure you don't miss out. 

Bishop's Stortford Health Walks

Our latest programme of regular walks starting from award-winning Southern Country Park, Thorley Lane East, Bishop's Stortford. Walks are a grade 2-3 depending on the group on the day (around 30-60 minutes in duration, 2-3 miles long with moderate hills and possible stiles) and take in the park and surrounding countryside.

Dacorum

Walkers enjoying exercise, fresh air and chat in Potten End, Dacorum

A long established scheme with a good variety of start points throughout the borough including Markyate, Tring, Berkhamsted, Bovingdon, Potten End, Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley. From each starting point, there are a variety of routes for the leader to choose from, which take walkers through parks and countryside and more often than not end in a local café or pub for a well earned cup of tea and a chat. This is a really popular programme with a huge range of walks during the week, on Sundays and on Tuesday evenings in the summer months.

Harpenden and Villages

Walkers enjoying exercise, fresh air and chat

The Harpenden and Villages Health Walks provide an excellent way of exploring the countryside around Harpenden, Wheathampstead, Gustard Wood, Hatching Green, Nomansland and Redbourn.

Introduced in April 2008, the ‘First Steps’ walks are approximately 30 minute long, on flat and even ground with no stiles and have regular stopping places. These walks are ideal for people who are just starting to undertake regular walking, who need to walk at their own pace or need regular rest stops.

Hertsmere

Walkers enjoying exercise, fresh air and chat whilst taking their 'first steps' 

Hertsmere Health Walks offer a really varied number and grade of walks, which operate each week from regular meeting points in Radlett, Bushey, Borehamwood and Potters Bar. These popular walks, led by a growing number of friendly volunteer walk leaders, offer many different routes through towns, parks and countryside and the opportunity for a coffee afterwards.

Hitchin and Letchworth

Walkers enjoying exercise, fresh air and chat in Hitchin 

A busy programme of walks, during the week, some weekends and summer evenings. Most of the walks start at pubs so there is ample parking and refreshments to come back to for those that want them.

There are a number a regular 'First Steps' walks using a local parks, which are ideal for those looking for a gentle walk. Most other walks take you into countryside on the edge of Hitchin and Letchworth, including the areas around Oughtonhead Common, Charlton, Gosmore, Willian and Norton, which provide wonderful scenery.

St Albans

Walkers enjoying exercise, fresh air and chat in St Albans

A growing programme of walks during the week, weekend and summer evenings with routes through Highfield Park, Verulamium Park, Heartwood Forest, Greenwood Park, Batchwood and Bricket Wood.  Some routes are suitable for wheelchairs and buggies and offer the option for refreshments after the walk. The latest edition to the programme is the successful 'First Steps' walks at Highfield Park.

Watford and Three Rivers

Walkers enjoying exercise, fresh air and chat in Abbots Langley, Three Rivers

This programme incorporates walks from award-winning Cassiobury Park in Watford to the beautiful countryside around Croxley Green, Abbots Langley and Rickmansworth. Whilst most walks are grade 3, of an hour or more, there are some shorter and slower-paced walks available, as welll as regular weekend walks. The newest edition to the programme are buggy walks on Chorleywood Common in conjunction with Chorleywood & Loudwater Children's Centre.

Broxbourne

Coordinated by the Borough of Broxbourne Council walks take place across the borough at award-winning parks such Cedars, off Theobalds Lane and Cheshunt, off Park Lane in Cheshunt. For a full timetable of walks please visit Broxbourne Health Walks.

Stevenage

Coordinated by Stevenage Borough Council, walks are now taking place regularly at Fairlands Valley Park in Stevenage. For more details contact Tricia Broadbridge on 01438 230328 or visit Stevenage Health Walks.

Welwyn Garden City

Coordinated by Finesse Leisure, walks take place at award-winning Stanborough Park, off Stanborough Road in Welwyn Garden City. All walks start from the café/reception area at the south lake, have refreshments available afterwards and are accessible by public transport. Car parking is available but there is a charge. Ask for details of a reduced cost resident permit at the park reception. Please could new walkers arrive 10 minutes before the start of the walk to complete their health questionnaire.
