The Hertfordshire Health Walks are supported by Hertfordshire County Council, St Albans City and District Council, East Herts Council, Hertsmere Borough Council, North Herts District Council and Three Rivers District Council, through their sponsorship of the Countryside Management Service (CMS) who co-ordinate all the individual schemes. The walks are accredited by the national health walking initiative, Walking for Health, coordinated by Natural England. We also work with the Volunteer Centres in Hertfordshire and North & East Herts and West Herts Primary Care Trusts.
Our Health Walk Schemes
Bishop's Stortford
Health walks in Bishop's Stortford are the latest edition to the health walks family, starting on a reguar basis in 2009 with support from East Herts Council.
Dacorum
The Dacorum Health Walks started several years ago as a partnership with Dacorum Borough Council, Walking for Health, the Primary Care Turst and CMS. It is now coordinated by CMS through the support of Hertfordshire County Council.
Harpenden
The Harpenden Health Walk scheme has been running for ten years and was the first one to be set up in Hertfordshire, along with the help of Harpenden Town Council. It is now has a varied programme of walks in Harpenden and the villages and towns around.
Hertsmere
Health walks in Hertsmere have been running successfully for a number of years, the first of which was launched in Borehamwood in 2003. This scheme was closely followed by similar schemes in Radlett and Bushey. These walks were originally launched in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertsmere Primary Care Trust, Fifty Plus, the CMS and a team of dedicated volunteers who lead walks and devise new routes.
St Albans
The St Albans Health Walks started in partnership with St Albans City and District Council who has provided funding along with Hertfordshire County Council. The walks around Highfield Park began in June 2007 following numerous requests for a scheme in St Albans and an identified need in the Camp area. It has since expanded to include a route at Verulamium Park, Batchwood and Heartwood Forest.
Hitchin & Letchworth
The Hitchin & Letchworth Health Walks scheme was set up in Hitchin in January 2006 as a partnership between CMS, North Hertfordshire District Council and the local Primary Care Trust. The programme is provided by local volunteer leaders and administered by CMS and through support from Hertfordshire County Council Letchworth walks have been incorporated into the programme.
Watford & Three Rivers
The Watford and Three Rivers Health Walk Scheme was set up in 2004 in partnership with the Watford and Three Rivers Primary Care Trust and Three Rivers District Council. The Primary Care Trust reorganised in 2006 and the co-ordination of the scheme was taken on by the CMS, supported by Three Rivers Council and Hertfordshire County Council.
